Multimonitor support on FGLRX in Ubuntu Oneiric 11.10

September 29, 2011

Having banged my head against the wall regarding multimonitor support on Ubuntu Oneiric (11.10) and fglrx ATI drivers, I thought I’d put up a quick post on how to make it work.

I had been running into the issue that when trying to stop my multiple monitors being mirrored, I kept getting the error:

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2560, 1024), minimum=(320,200), maximum(1280, 1280)

Clearly this was not a great situation, as after all, you don’t have two monitors just to mirror them all the time.

In order to fix this you need to go into the ATI Control Centre (amdcccle) as a super user:

gksudo amdcccle

Once you’ve done the above, go to the ‘Display manager’ option on the left side of the screen, and then in ‘Multi Display’, you need to select ‘Multi-display desktop with display(s) 2’. Click ‘apply’, and then restart the computer.

You can now set up your non-mirrored setup via the normal ubuntu ‘Displays’ application, select non-mirrored, move your monitors around as you’d like the display to join up, and you should be good to go!

Edit: Thanks to @NtynRuben for correction of missing ‘c’ in amdcccle
